About HoursToDecimals
Free calculators for turning time into decimal hours and doing timesheet maths.
What HoursToDecimals is
HoursToDecimals is a small set of free calculators for turning hours and minutes into decimal hours and back, totalling timesheets and projecting PTO. It exists because decimal hours trip people up: 8:30 is not 8.30, and every payroll or invoice system seems to round a little differently.
Principles
- Private. Every calculation runs in your browser. The numbers you type are never sent to a server. See the privacy page.
- Free and simple. No accounts, no sign-up walls, no downloads.
- Tested maths. The conversion, rounding, timesheet and PTO logic is plain code covered by automated tests, including awkward cases such as minutes of 60 or more, overnight shifts and values that sit exactly halfway between two rounding steps.
- Explained. Each tool shows the formula and a worked example so you can check the answer by hand.
How rounding works here
When a time sits exactly halfway between two rounding steps, it rounds up. For example 8:07:30 becomes 8:15 under quarter-hour rounding. The quarter hour rounding chart shows every minute and the minutes to decimal chart lists the conversions.
Totals are worked out from the exact time and rounded once, so they always agree with the hours and minutes total. Some payroll systems add the rounded lines instead; where that can change the answer, the tools offer an option to match it.
Limits
These tools are not payroll software and do not give legal or financial advice. They do not apply overtime rules, tax, or employer-specific policies such as accrual caps. Always check results against your employer's official records before relying on them for pay, billing or compliance.
Find a mistake?
If a result looks wrong, the quickest way to help is to note the input, the rounding mode you chose and what you expected. Corrections are welcome.
