How it works

Convert each entry to decimal hours, then total them. The total is worked out from the exact time and rounded once, so it always agrees with the h:mm total. If your payroll adds the rounded lines instead, tick “Add the rounded lines”.

Worked example: Total 8:15, 7:40 and 6:55

  1. 8:15 = 8.25
  2. 7:40 = 7.67
  3. 6:55 = 6.92
  4. Exact total: 22:50 = 22 + 50 ÷ 60 = 22.83

22:50 worked = 22.83 hours (22.84 if you add the rounded lines 8.25 + 7.67 + 6.92)

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal?

Type the hours and the minutes into the boxes at the top. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75. By hand, divide the minutes by 60 and add the hours.

How do I add hours and minutes as decimals?

Paste all your entries into the list and the total is worked out for you. By hand, convert each entry to decimal hours and add the results, or add the hours and minutes first and convert once.

Should I round each day or only the weekly total?

It depends on how you are paid or how you invoice. By default this tool adds the exact time and rounds the total once, so 8:15, 7:40 and 6:55 total 22.83 hours. Some payroll systems round each day first and add the rounded values, which gives 22.84. Tick “Add the rounded lines” to match that.

What format should the entries be in?

Use h:mm, for example 7:45, with two-digit minutes. Spelled-out times such as 7h 45m or 7 hours 45 minutes also work. Separate entries with new lines, commas, semicolons or spaces. Anything that is not a valid time is flagged and left out of the total.

Can I paste a column from a spreadsheet?

Yes. A column of durations formatted as h:mm pastes as one entry per line. Clock times with AM or PM are not durations, so use the timesheet calculator for those.
