Minutes to Decimal Chart
Look up any number of minutes from 1 to 60 and read off the decimal hour. Every value is calculated by the same code as the calculators, never typed in by hand, so it is safe to print and pin up.
How to use this chart
Divide the minutes by 60. Fifteen minutes is 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25. Seven minutes is 7 ÷ 60 = 0.1167, which rounds to 0.12. Use the 2-decimal column for most payroll and the 4-decimal column when you add many entries together.
Worked example: Read 37 minutes from the chart
- Find 37 in the 31 to 45 block
- The 2-decimal column says 0.62
- The 4-decimal column says 0.6167
37 minutes = 0.62 hours (0.6167 unrounded)

Frequently asked questions
What is 1 minute in decimal hours?
1 ÷ 60 = 0.0167 hours, which is 0.02 when rounded to two decimal places.
Should I use the 2-decimal or 4-decimal column?
Most payroll systems work to 2 decimals. If you add many entries, use 4 decimals and round only the total, because rounding every entry first can drift by a few hundredths.
How do I convert more than 60 minutes?
Divide by 60. 135 minutes is 2.25 hours. Or take out the whole hours first: 135 minutes is 2 hours 15 minutes, and 15 minutes is 0.25.
Why are 20 and 40 minutes 0.33 and 0.67?
They are thirds of an hour, 0.3333 and 0.6667, and neither can be written exactly in decimal. Rounded to two places they become 0.33 and 0.67.
How do I go from decimal back to minutes?
Multiply by 60. The reverse lookup table on this page covers the common fractions, and the decimal hours calculator handles any value.
